If a person is having difficulty remembering a mobile phone number or struggles to push the small button numbers on a normal sized mobile telephone then this is an ideal phone. This is one of the best mobile phones to buy for an individual with mild dementia or a person with limited vision. You can write family, friends or carers names next to the large letter buttons on the mobile phone for easy recognition.

With large, easy push buttons and with the ability to write a name next to the letter it makes dialing a person’s number very easy for the mobile operator. This is especially true if the person is a frail senior or suffers from memory loss that is associated with dementia. The phone also has some great built-in security features giving you added peace of mind

The Doro phone has a built-in Geo-locator for security.

Another great advantage of buying the Doro 580 big button mobile phone over other mobile phones is that for added safety on the back of the device is an assistance key.  If the person with dementia gets lost or confused the helper or person who finds the confused person can press this button and then an instant text message is sent to all recipients and numbers programmed into the phone. This text message includes the location of the device plus a phone call is also made to the first telephone number that has been programmed into the phone. Another great advantage of the Doro 580 is when the assistance call is made, the device automatically goes in to hands-free mode.

Review of the Doro big button mobile phone

The fabulous Doro 580 mobile phone is an ideal mobile phone to give a person with dementia. This is because the mobile phone has extra-large buttons and easy to remember names next to the buttons. It is a very simple to understand mobile phone. Using the device is made easy and understandable and helps to eliminate frustration that can be caused by using a more conventional mobile phone. The Doro 580 gives you peace of mind if a person with memory loss is left on their own and needs to be in contact with somebody.

The Doro 580 sim free mobile phone also allows for more independence for the person and peace of mind for you.

  1. Great post! Keep me updated with your progress on the subject.

  2. Great looking phone for my mum, but far too expensive, sorry for my mum really.

    • I’ve emailed you with a few contacts as to where you can buy a used mobile phone that are a lot cheaper than the ones listed although they are the same phone, but used.
I hope this helps your mum.

        Hi John,
My Mum has moderate dementia and is also very deaf. Please would you kindly recommend a second hand phone which will take incoming calls, which has large buttons and can be made loud so she can hear me clearly when I phone. She refuses to wear her hearing aid. Mum lives in a residential care home. Many thanks. Kind regards, Caroline

        • Hello Caroline,

Believe it or not it’s quite difficult to give an exact answer as it’s a difficult request you’ve made. You can get these phones that do some of the things you’re asking but not all of them, not to my knowledge anyway. Although I would love to hear from anybody who does know one that is available.

I do see why you would want one that does what you’re requesting.

          The dilemma is –

          1. that if the phone receives incoming calls then it would normally allow outgoing calls, which if your mum has dementia can be very confusing going through the process of making the call to the correct person.

          2. finding a mobile phone with large buttons is not a problem as they are readily available with both in buttons and picture buttons.

          3. I’m not sure of a mobile phone that once answered would be instantly loud. There are buttons that can be pressed to put the phone on loud speaker, but again, if your mum has dementia it can be confusing having to choose the correct button to press to put the call on loud speaker.

In addition your request is for a second hand mobile. There are marketplaces like EBay, Gumtree and Amazon that do sell used secondhand mobile phones but they tend to be older phones with not as many functions as your request is asking. I have sent you an email with some of the most relevant phones that do answer some of your requests.

Thanks for the comment Caroline and I’m sorry I’m not able to give you an exact answer of recommend a specific product.

Good luck to you and best wishes to you and your mum.

Like the easy dial and settings of the mobile phone that is also very easy to use and user do not need to mug up the speed dials its also very readable on phone itself. Great idea and great product!!
I would recommend it to anyone who suffers from dementia if they need a phone

  4. Where can I purchase a phone like this?

    • Hello Angela, Sorry the page to buy the mobile had sold out of the Doro 334 gsm mobile phones but we have now updated with the best place to buy at the cheapest price and the phone is now available to buy again.
Thanks for your patience. Let me know if you find the phone anywhere cheaper and we will let people know.
      john

  5. Does this phone charge up just by using a plug socket, and then you can carry it around like a normal mobile phone

    • Hello Mr Colby, Yes the mobile phone charges with its own charger plugged in to the mains like any other mobile phone would do.

  6. Sounds ideal, but too pricey for me I’m afraid.

  7. Hi,

    Thanks for bringing these together.

Do any of these handsets have an address book and calendar function that can be accessed by voice control?

    • Hello Colin,
That’s a great question. I’ll do some more in-depth research and send you the ones that answer your request. If you find one yourself please let me know.
      Thanks
      John
